Description
Brazil nuts are large edible seeds harvested from the Brazil nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa), which is native to the Amazon rainforest in South America, particularly Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru.
Brazil nuts are highly nutritious, containing high levels of selenium, a trace mineral that is essential for human health. They are also rich in other nutrients such as magnesium, phosphorus, copper, and thiamine (vitamin B1). Additionally, Brazil nuts provide protein and healthy fats, including omega-6 fatty acids. The combination of selenium and vitamin E in Brazil nuts may promote skin health by protecting against oxidative damage, reducing inflammation, and supporting collagen production.
However, eating excessive amounts of Brazil nuts, which are very high in selenium, can lead to selenium toxicity. It’s important to consume Brazil nuts in moderation, typically no more than one to three nuts per day.
